RCMP issued 19 speeding tickets over a three-hour period yesterday on the Trans-Canada Highway in Terra Nova Nation Park even though traffic volume was low.
One driver was clocked at 150 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. She was ticketed and her licence was suspended.
Meanwhile, when it comes to excuses for excessive speeds on the province’s roads, Sergeant Matt Christie has heard it all.
He’s with RCMP Traffic Services in Holyrood and has pulled over drivers doing speeds in excess of 150, 160, and even 170 km/h.
This is National Road Safety Week.
Sergeant Christie says it’s not unusual for people not to realize their speeds in some cases, but when you reach speeds 51 km/h over the speed limit, that’s not usually the case.
Some will readily admit they knew how fast they were going while others claim they did not—which he says is hard to believe. Excuses include being late for work, an appointment, or a flight.
The faster your speed, the less time you have to react and respond, and that can have disastrous results, says Christie.
