Efforts are underway to pay tribute to one of the victims of that horrific crash on Topsail Road on Monday night.
44-year-old Chad Pitcher was on his motorbike, waiting at a light, when he was struck by a speeding Kia Soul.
Family members established a GoFundme page for Chad to help pay for funeral costs. About $14,000 was raised before the page was closed earlier today. Now, CUPE Local 2099, city of Mount Pearl, has set up their own GoFundMe with the goal of raising $60,000 for Pitcher’s wife and three children.
A motorcycle ride is also planned in the coming days to remember Pitcher.
A post to the Newfoundland Motorcycle Experience from Dan Warren, a friend of the victim, calls him a “good man” and indicates a ride on his behalf will be organized in the days ahead.
The crash, which involved six vehicles, also claimed the life of the 25-year-old driver of the Kia.
RCMP Investigating RNC Involvement in Crash, Report to be Reviewed by SIRT
The actions of RNC leading up to Monday night’s horrific crash on Topsail Road in St. John’s have been handed over to the province’s newly-formed Serious Incident Response Team for investigation.
Mike King was appointed as the province’s first SIRT director last summer, but the process of putting a team together is ongoing.
The RNC say a patrol officer attempted to pull over a black Kia Soul near McNamara Drive in Paradise at 8:05 p.m., but the vehicle sped off and the pursuit was called off at Trail’s End.
The Kia was then involved in a collision at Topsail and Hamlyn roads in St. John’s resulting in two deaths. Six vehicles in total were involved in the dramatic collision.
While the Constabulary is investigating the crash itself, the newly appointed Director of SIRT-NL says RCMP will conduct an investigation into the RNC’s actions leading up to the crash.
Mike King says RCMP were called in because he’s still in the process of developing his team. SIRT-NL will oversee and review that investigation.
King says once fully operational, SIRT-NL will conduct its own investigations into serious incidents involving police.
