Be prepared if you have been collecting government money to which you are not entitled. That’s the warning today from a local credit counseling service.
Various government programs are now available for those struggling with the loss of employment, but not all of those who have received benefits meet the criteria, and they will eventually have to pay that money back.
The CERB offers a $2,000 monthly payment to those who have lost work due to COVID-19 and whose income is less than $1,000 a month.
Anyone can apply, but not everyone is eligible. Those who should not be receiving it will ultimately have to repay that money.
The federal government has indicated there won’t be a penalty applied, but Executive Director of Credit Counselling NL, Al Antle says be prepared—there could be further consequences.
