Archaeologist and heritage consultant Gerald Penney, whose career took him from the south coast of Newfoundland to Northern Labrador, has passed away.
He was 69.
Penney’s work led him to find or revisit 103 sites in Labrador and 310 on the Island.
He was well known for his humour, wealth of knowledge and experience with the province’s history.
The Provincial Archaeology Office of Newfoundland and Labrador took to Facebook with their condolences. They say he was an active participant in a number of groups and organizations, including the Miawpukek First Nation.
Chief Misel Joe says the Miawpukek First Nation is remembering Penny as powerful, remarkable and committed. He says they have collaborated many times over the past 30 years.
They have lowered the community flags to half-mast in his memory.
Services will take place at a later date.
