RCMP are concerned about a new social media gift-giving trend that’s growing in popularity.
Police say a number of groups have been created to promote anonymous gift exchanges. People who join the group provide personal information including their name, home address, and favourite things as suggestions for potential gifts. In some cases, participants are even sharing the names and ages of their children.
The groups offer gifts like wine, treats, and bath products delivered by anonymous “ninjas.”
RCMP are strongly advising against the sharing of personal information on social media group sites, especially information on children
They say while many groups are well intended, and the activity is not illegal, you cannot assume that every person involved has good intentions.
Providing personal information about children could run the risk of opening up communication between online predators and children, according to police.
