There is a silver lining to having to work remotely and for one researcher that lining is getting creative about sharing Newfoundland and Labrador’s history.
Researcher Natalie Dignam has just begun digging up hidden gems for a podcast, funded by the MUN Harris Centre through Thriving Regions Partnership and Heritage NL, that will highlight the traditional skills in communities along the Baccalieu Trail.
A hidden gem could be a storyteller, musician, berry-picker, hooked mat maker, carver, knitter, guide or craft producer.
Dignam says the community storytelling will allow people to find value in their community and strengthen connections there.
She says initially her project was meant to be field work so she was looking forward to heading out to the communities.
Dignam says she was bummed at first after finding out she had to complete it remotely but then she realized it is a great opportunity to pull out interesting and valuable stories in history while a lot of people cannot physically go there.
