Those who help shape the minds of future generations are unequivocally in support of the “Black Lives Matter” initiative.
Dean Ingram, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association, says racism in any form is abhorrent, and that they can teach children about that through the curriculum.
The curriculum is the responsibility of the Department of Education, but others involved in our schools are often called in to help shape the course outline.
Ingram sees schools as a reflection of society at large, and that it would be incorrect to think that racism does not exist in our province.
The NLTA says there also has to be discussions about the placement of such a course, and where it would fit within the current curriculum.
