The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it’s open to changes to make police more responsive to the needs of the community.
RNC Constable James Cadigan was reacting to recent calls for police reform in light of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and other incidents involving interactions between police and the public.
Cadigan points to the creation of a Mobile Crisis Response Team which has already resulted in changes to the way in which police respond to mental health crises.
#Throwback to the launch of the Mobile Crisis Response Team in April of 2018. They can be reached by calling 911, the RNC communication center, or the 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Line at 1-888-737-4668. The Mental Health Crisis Line is free and confidential. #YourRNC pic.twitter.com/cifdiNTVbW

He says a positive impact was felt right away, not only on the front lines, but with the people and families involved. “And…that’s what really matters.”
The RNC has also developed a dedicated Intimate Partner Violence Unit that can provide help information and assistance to those who have questions or concerns.
The number is 729-8093 or by email at ipv@rnc.gov.nl.ca.
If you want to contact our Intimate Partner Violence Unit, you can do so directly by phone and email. This dedicated unit continues to work with our community partners in their effort to end violence in our communities. #YourRNC pic.twitter.com/cEEDMutnRy
