Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are known for their love of cod, and one local company will soon be manufacturing pet treats that uses an often overlooked part of the fish.

Ben Wiper is passionate about the idea of creating high-demand products out of the waste left behind from industry activity—so much so that he founded 3F Waste Recovery. The company is focused on reinventing the use and application of undervalued materials within the farming, fishing, and forestry sectors.

Preparation is underway to launch ‘Cod Skin Pet Treats’ from the manufacturing plant Marine Scientific Ltd. which is located in Bay Roberts.

Wiper is confident that the pet treats will hit store shelves in the coming weeks.

Wiper says there are underlying health benefits from the treats, as well. He says cod skins have the most collagen of all marine skins, and it’s great for the coat and elasticity of the skin.
