A 40-year-old man from Embree is facing serious charges after a frightening incident in the community this week.
Lewisporte RCMP was called by a woman around 6:00 Wednesday evening. She told police that she was driving with her family when she stopped to check on the driver of another vehicle parked by the side of the road. When she stopped, the driver reportedly left his vehicle and approached with a large knife.
Police say the woman drove off but reported hearing a number of shots fired in the area moments later. Officers from Lewisporte, Twillingate, Carmanville, and Gander detachments responded to the area.
They pulled over 40-year-old Jeremy Barrett and arrested him without incident. Officers found two rifles in the vehicle, along with a number of knives, ammunition, and other weapons.
Barrett was charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, reckless discharge of a firearm, and two counts of unsafe storage of a firearm.
Following a court appearance, he was released from custody on a number of conditions, and scheduled to appear in court again in September.
