The Colony of Avalon Archaeology Site and Interpretation Centre is another not-for-profit organization impacted by the effects of COVID-19.
Board member Jane Severs says it was a financial decision to keep the tourist attraction in Ferryland closed to visitors this year.
According to their own visitor data, she says 60 per cent of their revenue comes from out-of-province residents.
Opening the site up completely to the public would put future operations at financial risk, but they are doing as much as they can virtually, says Severs. She says a great example of that is a virtual cook-off.
The Great Colonial Cook-Off is an interactive culinary challenge where each week, the Colony of Avalon posts a recipe from the 17th century, then recreates it.
Lori, who works in the colony’s kitchen reproduction, recreates them too, using only the supplies that villagers would have had back in the 1600s.
The cook-off begins July 4. For more information, visit the Colony of Avalon Facebook page.
