The residents of one Burin Peninsula community are at their wit’s end over a big stink caused by rotting herring.
Little Bay East resident Gloria Brown says the problem has been going on for about two years and they can’t seem to get any remedy or relief.
For two years in a row, herring became trapped under the ice in the spring and died—their carcasses rotting and turning the water of the harbor a sickly green.
Brown says the smell is even worse, with no escape from the stench.
Fish carcasses are also lining the beach.
Brown lives across from the beach and says the water has turned from red to brown to green. She calls the situation “horrible.”
