Concerns have been raised about accessibility issues facing people in the Water Street pedestrian mall, after a post was made on social media highlighting flaws in the area’s design.
Gaylynne Gulliver of Downtown St. John’s says the event is new and still evolving, and they’ve identified a few hiccups along the way. She says there has been a learning curve, but they are working with the capital city to develop a plan.
Gulliver says they are looking to help businesses with a program to develop ramps where possible, while the city will review its streets.
She says they are facing a challenge with some of the older buildings, where they can’t meet the universal code.
Gulliver says details on the “ramps up” program will be released early next week.
