The town of Lewisporte is losing its patience with the provincial government on lack of action on an Economic Diversification Strategy to address the loss of the Labrador Marine service.
Lewisporte, formerly known as the “Gateway to the North” lost its Labrador marine service early last year.
The province moved the Labrador coastal freight service to Happy Valley-Goose Bay—a significant economic blow to the central Newfoundland town.
Mayor Betty Clarke says 16 months later, they’re still waiting for some kind of action.
She says it’s “just like pulling teeth” trying to get some progress. They’ve been waiting on a lease agreement for the wharf for months and they still haven’t received it.
Clarke wants to know why Lewisporte has been put on hold for so long.
