Whales have gotten a great deal of attention in recent weeks as large numbers of the behemoths have come inshore to feed and put on a show, but officials warn, it’s important to give the animals plenty of space.
DFO whale researcher Dr. Jack Lawson says he sees the consequences of human encounters with whales all the time.
He’s amazed at how many humpbacks he’s seen with propeller marks on their backs. He admits humpbacks do tend to be curious and may approach a slow moving boat, but says he’s also seen whales chased down as well.
In one case in Flatrock a few years ago he actually witnessed someone jumping over the backs of whales on a jet ski.
It is against the law to chase, harass, or get close to marine mammals.
