The provincial government is partnering with the College of the North Atlantic and the Newfoundland Regiment Advisory Council to complete the Trail of the Caribou – a series of monuments marking significant battles fought by the Newfoundland Regiment in WWI.
InnovativeNL, a St. John’s-based engineering and project management firm, has been chosen to fabricate a bronze caribou monument for installation at Gallipoli, Turkey at a cost of $194,000.
The 1,500 pound, ten-foot monument will be placed 25 metres northeast of the Hill 10 cemetery where 12 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment are now resting including Private Hugh McWirter – the regiment’s first casualty at Gallipoli.
The work will be completed with the help of 19 students from CNA’s Geomatics/Surveying Engineering Technology program.
The Trail of the Caribou extends through northern France and Belgium and includes sites at Beaumont-Hamel, Masnieres, Gueudecourt, Monchy-le-Preux and Kortkrijk.
