Chrystia Freeland has been sworn in as Canada’s new federal finance minister. Governor General Julie Payette led the ceremony from Rideau Hall in Ottawa this afternoon.
Freeland, who will continue her responsibilities as deputy prime minister, is the first woman in Canada to hold the title of finance minister.
Bill Morneau resigned as Finance Minister and as the MP for Toronto Centre on Monday, in the wake of controversy surrounding government’s involvement with WE Charity.
Dominic LeBlanc was sworn in as intergovernmental affairs minister.
Attendees wore masks and maintained physical distance for the ceremony.
Freeland and LeBlanc removed their masks as they took their oaths, and bumped elbows with the Prime Minister and Governor General instead of shaking hands.
