There’s a controversy brewing in CBS over the development of a new community park that will see the destruction of a local green space.
Area residents say the wilderness area is being ripped up for a parking lot to accommodate 15 vehicles.
Trudy, who lives on nearby Bishop’s Road told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly, it makes no sense and they can’t get any satisfaction from the local town council.
She says there are large, mature trees just outside her property line which will be removed to put up a fence with smaller trees planted in their place.
Margie told Open Line the green space was set aside and developed for seniors by Paul Johnson as part of the Grand Concourse.
She says wildlife are attracted to the green space which encompasses wetlands and coastline, and council is “mowing down” white pine trees even as efforts are underway to save them. 50-foot high spruce were “disintegrated in seconds last week,” according to Margie.
The Town of CBS says it understands the concerns expressed by area residents but says the new park will be a dedicated green space for the entire community and something that residents have been seeking for years.
The park will include the town’s very first inclusive playground.
The parking lot area off Bishop’s Road was identified as the best location and trees and landscaping will be completed. The contract calls for the preservation of all existing trees wherever possible in consultation with an arborist.
