A local tourism operator is concentrating on his family and the next tourism season knowing this year would be a bust.
Jared Clarke operates Bird the Rock—a tour company that takes guests on guided excursions to see some of the best birdlife Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer.
Jared Clarke spoke with VOCM’s Linda Swain. Listen below:
The business, like many in the local tourism sector, relies almost entirely on national and international visitors.
His family was fortunate in that they don’t depend entirely on his business, so he was able to make the decision not to offer tours this summer. That allowed him to concentrate on his family and invest time on his business rather than in his business.
Clarke is on the board with Destination St. John’s, and is very involved with Hospitality NL.
He says there has been lots of discussion within the tourism sector on what happens next.
In the meantime, he’s been developing partnerships and working on new packages for the year ahead, which he hopes will return to some sense of normalcy.
