The Carpenters Union Local 579 says the Labour Board “doesn’t get it” and they’re seeking an apology for a recent privacy breach involving workers at the Grieg NL site in Marystown.
The union was responding to recent comments from Labour Relations Board Chair David Conway regarding the privacy breach involving the names of workers interested in joining a union.
The Carpenters Union says some of those workers were laid off as a result.
Local 579 President Mike Williams says the Board does not have sufficient employee representation from the construction sector, something he calls a “significant oversight.”
Trades NL Executive Director Darin King says in the past there have been as many as five representatives on the board with a construction background, but currently, there is only one. The position of Deputy Chief Executive Officer remains vacant.
Williams says the Board is “seriously understaffed” and unable to perform its duties in a timely manner. He believes the failure of government to properly fund and staff the Board has resulted in serious problems, causing it to lose the trust of the labour relations community.
