The MHA for the Torngat Mountains is calling for the construction of a road to link the north coast of Labrador to the Trans-Labrador Highway and the rest of North America.
Lela Evans, originally from Makkovik, defeated her cousin Randy Edmunds—the Liberal incumbent for the district—in the last general election.
She admits that she and her family were long-time Liberals but she could see that no action was being taken to address the pressing needs in her district.
Evans’ philosophy is a simple one passed down through her family—decisions made need to be “for the greater good.”
She cites continued problems encountered with the Labrador marine service and the fact that a road should have been built to the north coast, similar to that on the south coast. She contends the decision was made to appease business interests rather than the needs of the residents of the north coast—and now they’re living with the consequences.
Evans says voters need to elect the candidate who will do the best job, not the party they represent. She says voters need to elect an MHA who fights for your district and stop voting for friends and relatives or the party they think they like.
She says “It’s not a hockey game, it’s not Montreal versus Toronto, the stakes are too high.”
