Advocates for women’s rights are rallying behind a sexual assault victim who may soon have to go to trial for the third time.
The case of former RNC officer Douglas Snelgrove was declared a mistrial on Friday. Douglas’ defense team has said there was no way to avoid that outcome. This means a new trial could be called.
The St. John’s Status of Women Council is outraged over the outcome. Executive Director Laura Winters says the needs of the victim must be the priority.
She doesn’t believe “the justice system has the capacity to do that” and that they have “shown over and over again that it does not.”
Winters wonders how the trial can happen in a way that will have the least negative impact on the victim. She wants to let the victim know there is a “community of women behind her.”
