The Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal has dismissed serial rapist Sofyan Boalag’s attempt to appeal his sentence and his designation as a dangerous offender.
Boalag was convicted in 2017 in connection with three counts of sexual assault with a weapon and one count of overcoming resistance among other serious charges.
The capital city was gripped with fear after three separate women were violently sexually assaulted in the fall of 2012.
Boalag was arrested in December of that year and was convicted in provincial court in 2017.
He was designated a dangerous offender and given an indeterminate sentence as a result. Boalag appealed that decision, arguing that the trial judge erred in her assessment of his dangerous offender status.
The appeal court says while the trial judge erred in applying a less stringent standard in designating Boalag as a dangerous offender, they were satisfied that there was no miscarriage of justice as a result, and the appeal was dismissed.
