The town of Stephenville is taking action to address the potential risks of radon to residents.
Radon is a radioactive gas that is invisible, odourless, and tasteless. It comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock.
When the gas is released into the open air, it is harmless. However, when it is released into people’s homes it can be harmful and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
Stephenville is working with Take Action on Radon, a federal initiative where 100 test kits are distributed in communities to test for the gas.
Mayor Tom Rose, who calls it “the silent killer,” is hopeful that residents will avail of the program.
He says their hope is to get back 100 negative tests, but if there are any concerns they will put measures in place to mitigate the effects for residents.
