The application to develop the first lumpfish hatchery in the country has reached another important step in the application process.
Last year, Marbase announced their intention to develop the old Marystown shipyard for the project.
It’s anticipated that the hatchery will produce 3-million lumpfish annually, which will then be sold and used as “cleanerfish” to control the problem of sea lice for farmed salmon.
Marbase has submitted an environmental preview report to the province for the project. Anyone wishing to comment on the report is asked to send their comments to the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Municipalities by November 24.
A decision on the report is due by December 4.
