The SPCA has been dealt another setback during an already difficult year as its thrift store on Elizabeth Avenue in St. John’s was broken into for the second time in two months.
Thrift store manager Amy Walsh says their safe containing a significant amount of cash was taken in the first incident in early September. They had to pick up the pieces again yesterday morning when they learned that their front doors had been smashed in.
The RNC says a man was arrested nearby, and Walsh believes the incidents are related.
For now, they’re focused on getting back to normal and ensuring their animals are getting the care they need.
The thrift stores have become a critical source of revenue for the SPCA as most of their usual fundraisers have been cut due to COVID-19. It’s been tough for them to ensure that enough money is coming in. Walsh says the added cost of repairs is a “tough pill to swallow.”
The store reopened following the break-in, yesterday, and Walsh hopes to see people stop by to offer their support. However, the SPCA is accepting donations to support its shelter—and in turn, ease the cost of repairs.
