It’s the end of an era in Carbonear.
Fong’s Restaurant and Motel, which has been a fixture in the town for more than half a century, and spawned a Newfoundland business dynasty, is no more.
Fong’s was established in 1959 by Hayford Fong whose family had established business roots in St. John’s dating back to the early 1900s.
Hayford married in China in 1948 and returned to Newfoundland, settling in Carbonear where he set up his restaurant on Water Street.
Fong’s Restaurant later moved across from the TC Square as part of a shift in Carbonear’s business centre from Water Street to the new main highway.
Hayford passed the restaurant on to his son Art who expanded the business into a restaurant and motel.
Hayford’s son Dave recently retired after founding Quidi Vidi Brewery back in 1995.
Fong’s officially closed its doors for good earlier this month.
