Breakfast clubs look a little different in our schools this year, but the objective to fill young bellies got a shot in the arm with the Kids Eat Smart Radiothon on VOCM this morning.
VOCM Cares teamed up with Kids Eat Smart with tens of thousands being raised for their breakfast programs in schools in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Executive director Celina Stoyles announced the tally along with VOCM”s Paddy Daly and Kerri Hodder, having raised over $194,000.
NAPE President Jerry Earle, who gave a cheque for $25,000, said their members not only work in the schools but volunteer as well. He says a member on the west coast was recently late for a meeting as she had to prepare the breakfast club in her school that day.
Valerie Drew helps organize the breakfast program at St. Andrews Elementary. They used to serve between 70 and 100 kids but now are regularly seeing around 150 on a daily basis even with the changes. They have changed the menu options to reflect the “grab ‘n go”
Volunteers put the items in snack-size baggies, then they’re wheeled out on separate carts. The children then ask for the items they wish to have.
Thank you NAPE for your remarkable gift of $25,000! That is 25000 breakfasts for children in NL, like these students @eastpointelem who enjoy breakfast 5 days a week. #EveryBreakfastCounts@VOCMCares @jerry4nape pic.twitter.com/I1OMhBJSTL
