Construction is set to begin today on an extension to the Sheila NaGeira Theatre in Carbonear.
The expansion has been a decade in the making according to Mayor Frank Butt. He says the building needs more space for change rooms, which has hampered their ability to attract acts and performers.
In past years, when the venue hosted the Kiwanis Music Festival or dance recitals, the performers had to use the council chambers to change which was not an ideal situation. The expansion will now allow performers to access change rooms directly from the stage.
The expansion will also include a multi-use space that can be divided into two and even four more spaces including a small kitchenette for conference use.
Construction begins today and the space is expected to be fully enclosed before the winter sets in.
