Dominion stores in the province were hoping to open their doors on Thursday but that was contingent on getting fresh meat and produce trucked in from the Maritimes.
The Gulf ferries are tied up today because of high winds, and that could delay the reopening by a day or two.
Unifor accepted a new contract on Friday, ending the 12-week strike which resulted in the closure of Dominion’s 11 stores in Newfoundland.
The new four-year contract will be backdated to October 2019 and will expire in 2023. It will add an additional 35 cents per hour to the end rates of pay. Workers will receive PC gift cards with values of $50 to $500.
Chris Macdonald, the lead negotiator for Unifor, believes the strike was worth it. He acknowledges that the strike did not result in the changes the workers wanted, but Loblaw now knows that the membership in Newfoundland and Labrador will stand up for their rights.
Macdonald feels the company will approach future negotiations with this in mind.
