The NDP member for St. John’s Centre is hosting a town hall this evening to put the spotlight on how people who have been sexually assaulted are treated by the provincial justice system and what can be done to better support them.
MHA Jim Dinn, in collaboration with local activists, organized this evening’s event in response to recent cases including the mistrial in the Douglas Snelgrove case.
Snelgrove is a former RNC officer who was charged with sexually assaulting a woman while he was on duty.
He was acquitted in his first trial and a second trial resulted in a mistrial.
‘Justice for Survivors: A Panel Discussion on the Need for Justice Reform to Better Serve Victims of Sexual Assault’ will explore the issue from different perspectives.
It will be moderated by former MHA Gerry Rogers and include lawyer Lynn Moore, Executive Director of the St. John’s Status of Women’s Council, Laura Winters, Heather Elliott, Janet Lee, and Jude Benoit.
The panel discussion will take place this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1 and will be streamed on Facebook Live.
