The RCMP is turning to more secretive methods to try to curtail the increasing number of deaths related to ATVs in areas they police in the province.
Since January 1 of this year, 15 people have died in mishaps related to all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles in RCMP jurisdictions. The victims range in age from 14 to 91. That compares to 12 deaths last year and 10 in 2018.
The Mounties’ commanding officer for Newfoundland and Labrador, Ches Parsons, says officers will use more covert or undercover methods to crack down on illegal use of ATVs, such as unmarked and unconventional vehicles with officers sometimes in plainclothes.

Video surveillance will also be used to address speeding, helmet use, underage drivers, as well as drug and alcohol use.
The RCMP has also launched a 12-week social media campaign which will focus on the real-life devastation caused by the careless and illegal use of ATVs.
The RNC, meanwhile, which polices the Northeast Avalon, Corner Brook and Labrador West areas, is reporting no ATV-related deaths so far this year.
