St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen says “nothing personal,” but Danny Williams can’t light up his Christmas tree in the busiest roundabout in the city.
Williams, the developer of the new Galway area of the city, has accused council of being dysfunctional for not allowing him to illuminate a 32-foot tree in the middle of the roundabout near the new Costco.
Williams has suggested the decision might be personal, coming on the heels of the city’s own holiday lights event tomorrow.
But Breen says it’s strictly a safety issue amid concerns that Williams’ tree—if lit up—would distract drivers.
He says there are other places that Williams could put the tree other than the busiest roundabout in the City of St. John’s.
Breen says the city is acting on the legal advice of staff, clarifying that the tree can stay but the lights would have to go.
Williams says he’ll take the tree down and give it away.
