Work is underway to identify a mystery cannon in the historic community of Harbour Main.
The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador has been working with the Harbour Main-Chapel’s Cove-Lakeview Heritage Committee in identifying the cannon and has already made some progress in dating the massive iron weapon.
The cannon sits on the grass near Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church at the top of a rocky hill.
Initial measurements and other visible features reveal it to be a British 9-pounder Armstrong-Frederick pattern likely dating to about 1760.
It was likely put in place as a means to protect against possible attacks from the Americans and French.
Robin Martin, cannon expert from @ParksCanadaNL, came out to Harbour Main to help us identify our Mystery Cannon this week! He pointed out some cool facts about our cannon, like that our cannon's breech end features deliberately imprinted lines used as aiming guides for firing pic.twitter.com/PHykUlcQCY
