One of the province’s oldest towns, Harbour Grace, is aiming to revitalize its Registered Heritage District with a new Master Development Plan.
The town is hoping to capitalize on its designation, handed down in 1992 by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Heritage District includes such iconic structures as the old courthouse which dates to the 1830s, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, and the old Roman Catholic Cathedral.
Heritage NL’s master plan features the preservation and re-use potential of the ruins of Ridley Hall as a public garden and community venue.
Heritage NL says ongoing restoration projects have brought what it calls significant attention to the town’s heritage core in recent years.
That includes the purchase of the courthouse and Immaculate Conception Cathedral by Craig Flynn and Brenda O’Reilly who hope to turn the buildings into businesses while maintaining their heritage status.
