Despite an increased amount of disposable PPE littering the world’s lands and oceans in 2020, the main concern remains the other types of trash that are out there.
Recent studies suggest that over 1-billion masks entered the world’s oceans last year.
Dr. Max Liboiron emphasizes that number is an estimate, and that research from across the globe is suggesting that a lot of PPE is staying close to where it was littered, meaning it is staying land-based for the time being.
She notes the litter can eventually make its way to the ocean, and while she is concerned, she’s more worried about other types of trash.
Liboiron points out that PPE still accounts for a fraction of our waste, whereas cigarette butts account for 80 per cent of waste in this province. She says that’s what she is more concerned about.
