A local performance artist and activist is getting noticed in her efforts to make life safer for pedestrians in the capital city.
Anne Pickard-Vaandering has made a name for herself in recent years for bringing attention to sidewalk clearing in the downtown.
She’s also been putting her creativity into high visibility badges, armbands and pinnies for people to wear.
That effort prompted an enthusiastic endorsement from one local cab driver who remarked on a pedestrian who was wearing a reflective vest on a foggy and drizzly day.
He mentioned that he could see the pedestrian and wished that more people wore reflective wear. That’s when he noticed the reflective heart on her sleeve and asked where she got it.
Pickard-Vaandering says when she told him she makes them, he turned off the meter, saying “God love you” and telling her to save the taxi fare to buy reflective material.
