The City of St. John’s isn’t the only municipality concerned about the domestic use of fireworks.
Corner Brook discussed the issue at this week’s city council meeting.
The city received numerous complaints over the holiday period with some residents asking that personal use of fireworks be banned altogether.
Public Safety Chair Josh Carey raised the issue in council.
He says some complaints they received were about how the fireworks affected hypersensitive children, along with the obvious scaring of animals and pets. Other complaints included the night after night fireworks leading up to New Years and beyond for a couple of days.
Options under consideration include requiring a permit to fire off domestic fireworks, discretionary enforcement, or amendments to the noise bylaw.
The matter is under review with a decision expected before Canada Day, which is a popular time for the use of fireworks.
