Julie Payette has resigned as Governor General of Canada.
The move follows the completion of an independent review into allegations of workplace harassment and toxic behaviour within Rideau Hall.
Payette offered an apology on Thursday afternoon, saying that she’s sorry for the rising tensions within Rideau Hall over the past few months. She states that no formal complaints or official grievances were submitted during her tenure, but that she takes the allegations seriously.
As such, she concluded that a new Governor General should be appointed. Payette had served in the role since 2017.
“I am a strong believer in the principles of natural justice, due process and the rule of law, and that these principles apply to all equally. Notwithstanding, in respect for the integrity of my vice-regal Office and for the good of our country and of our democratic institutions, I have come to the conclusion that a new Governor General should be appointed. Canadians deserve stability in these uncertain times.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirms that he has received Payette’s resignation.
He states that the federal government takes these issues very seriously, and that “every employee in the Government of Canada has the right to work in a safe and healthy environment.”
Until a replacement is determined, Trudeau says the Chief Justice of Canada will fill the role on an interim basis.
“Today’s announcement provides an opportunity for new leadership at Rideau Hall to address the workplace concerns raised by employees during the review.”
