Efforts are underway to develop a memorial for the four Shea Heights fishermen who lost their lives in a boating accident just off Cape Spear in September of 2016.
Eugene Walsh, his son Keith Walsh and grandson Keith Walsh Junior died, along with family friend Billy Humby, while retrieving their fishing gear in rough and windy conditions.
The tragedy had a profound impact on the tight-knit Shea Heights community.
Jesse Wilkins, the Chair of the Shea Heights Community Board, says the remains of two of the men were never recovered and fundraising is underway to establish a memorial to the men on the lookout overlooking Waterford Valley.
They’re hoping to raise just over $6700 dollars and at last count, they were well on the way to that goal.
In just 48 hours they raised over $2000 dollars in what has been a tough time for many financially.
Anyone who wishes to make a donation can reach out to Wilkins through the Shea Heights Community Facebook page.
