A veteran American actor of stage and screen, whose acting career began in Newfoundland, has passed away.
Hal Holbrook passed away January 23 at the age of 95, but the news was only announced this week.

Holbrook was stationed at Fort Pepperell in St. John’s back in the 1940s and it was in Newfoundland where he honed his acting craft with the St. John’s Players.
He met and married his first wife, Newfoundlander Ruby Johnston, while stationed in St. John’s.
He is perhaps best known for his six-decade role in the one-man show Mark Twain Tonight. He played Broadway and also had numerous film and television roles. In 2007 he became the oldest Academy Awards nominee in the category of Best Supporting Actor for “Into the Wild.”
