A mosque under construction in Conception Bay South was targeted by vandals last week but so far there’s no evidence linking it to a hate crime.
The incident occurred sometime last Thursday at the site just west of Holy Spirit high in Manuels.
Safwan Choudhry, a spokesperson for the national Muslim association behind the mosque, says it’s too early to say if the vandalism was racially-motivated.
He says the organization realizes the incident is not reflective of the people and values of this province or Canada. But he says in line with the teachings of Islam, the Muslim community has forgiven those responsible with the goal of building bridges of understanding and tolerance.
The RNC has not confirmed if they have suspects in the case. But Choudhry says he’s been told by police that the culprits were three young teenagers.
Damage to the mosque is estimated at more than $20,000.
