The Teachers’ Union is concerned about the potential reach of two recent confirmed cases of COVID-19 connected to Mount Pearl Senior High.
President Dean Ingram says the provincial government’s guidance document on COVID-19 in schools defines an outbreak as two or more cases of COVID-19 epidemiologically linked to a specific school setting or location.
Ingram says while closing the school was the right decision and he’s pleased that students and staff will be tested, with 930 students and more than 50 staff, the inter-connectedness of the metro area school community is a reality that must be considered.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised about the enforcement of COVID protocols in the school system, including the wearing of masks.
Ingram says the Teachers’ Union has been raising questions about what it sees as the inconsistency surrounding COVID protocols in schools and those in other public spaces.
