Test results are expected back today to determine whether or not any of the new COVID variants in circulation globally can be identified in this province.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says a number of testing swabs had to be sent outside the province to undergo whole-genome sequencing to identify possible new variants of the COVID-19 virus in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Meanwhile, Dr. Fitzgerald says Public Health officials have determined through their contact tracing that there were a number of common-source events last weekend.
That included sporting events and parties, which is when the virus numbers really started to “take off” as she puts it.
She says with testing it takes time to identify those infected, but by isolating they were hoping to slow the spread of the virus.
