The co-founder of Democracy Watch calls the current provincial election situation “a big mess.”
Elections NL shifted to mail-in Special Ballots province-wide after NL reverted back into Alert Level 5 due to community spread of the UK variant of COVID-19.
Duff Conacher says many people in Newfoundland and Labrador will likely have their right to vote violated but they won’t be able to do much about it.
Conacher says holding anyone accountable by challenging the process and the outcome is tougher than many would think. It places a judge in what he calls an “impossible situation.”
He says to go before a judge after the fact to say that while thousands voted, others didn’t and that because they didn’t vote resulted in a different outcome is nearly impossible to prove.
Meanwhile, the PC’s say they have been contacted by several people who have received their special ballot envelope in the mail but without the voting kit inside.
