The province has recorded its fifth death from COVID-19 and the first related to the latest outbreak.
The man, over the age of 70, was in the Eastern Health region.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fizgerald today confirmed the death was the result of the latest outbreak.
There are eight new confirmed cases of the virus, all in the Eastern Health region with six people now in hospital. There are 345 active cases in the province with no new or outstanding presumed positive cases.
Dr. Fitzgerald cautioned against allowing lower case counts to lead to a false sense of security.
She says COVID is continuing to circulate in the community and behind each positive case is a group of contacts that need to be identified and tested. COVID numbers have increased in other provinces things begin to reopen, and she calls it a “certainty” that as long as the variants continue to circulate outside the province, they will make their way back into the province.
