A St. John’s man accused of damaging mailboxes and stealing the mail inside has been released from jail on conditions.
28-year-old Chad Clarke was arrested Tuesday night and charged with theft of mail, mischief, and breaking court orders. It was also discovered that his driver’s licence was suspended and that he owes about $60,000 in fines.
The alleged offences occurred on February 13 at community mailboxes in the St. John’s area and at Greycliffe Condominiums.
Five additional charges were laid when Clarke appeared in court via teleconference Friday afternoon. The new charges involve alleged offences on February 20, including damages and theft of mail before it was delivered by Canada Post. It’s not clear if that occurred at the Kenmount Road location.
Tuesday’s arrest came on the heels of several recent incidents of vandalism and thefts from community mailboxes in the metro region.
Clarke is due back in court on April 6.
