Police are saying very little about a sudden death at the St. John’s Lockup on Friday.
RNC officers responded to the Supreme Court building around 2:00 in the afternoon. The temporary holding cells are located up a narrow alleyway on the east side of the building.
It was later confirmed that a 48-year-old man died while being held in custody there.
In a statement, the RNC said they will work with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to find out how the man died.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety says a thorough review will be conducted into the death, including staff response and related policies and procedures.
Two years ago a report into the state of the province’s jails—triggered by four deaths in one year—concluded they were suffering from a mental health crisis.
At the time, Justice Minister Andrew Parsons said he hoped the report would result in an improved correctional system.
