An unusual whale stranding in the Boyd’s Cove has area residents talking.
The northern bottlenose whale, a deepwater animal that looks like a massive dolphin, became stranded in shallow water and died.
DFO whale researcher Dr. Jack Lawson tells VOCM News that the animal was reportedly in very poor condition when it came in. He had hoped to get samples of the creature, but COVID regulations prevented him from getting out.
Local DFO officials were unable to access the frozen carcass as it was too far offshore.
In the meantime, the carcass is attracting large birds of prey which are in turn attracting photographers and bird watchers.
