With increased snowfall amounts in recent weeks, issues for pedestrians getting around the capital city have returned to the forefront. For one city advocacy group, the answer does not lie in creative solutions.
Meghan Hollett, the chair of Happy City, a volunteer group that promotes dialogue around municipal issues, says St. John’s has adopted a web approach to clearing the sidewalks. It has come with some issues, such as one side of the road being cleared but not the other.
Last year, the city rejected a proposal that would have seen $1.35-million in additional funds for snow clearing. Hollett calls that decision “really disappointing” because this has been a consistent problem for a number of years.
She notes that not all of council is in favour of the current approach. She says those against argue that no matter how creative you get with your solutions, without increased funding it won’t be enough to make a difference for residents.
